Did you know that God is not good all the time?

The first time I heard my Pastor, Jackson Adebisi make a similar statement, I went, “Wait a minute! God is not good all the time ke?” Can you blame me though? Didn’t we chorus it all the time – “God is good, all the time; and all the time, God is good”?

Light dawned, however, when he explained and for me, the Israelites’ stories drive home the point. During the period of the plagues with the Egyptians, what group would have said: “God is good”? The Israelites, most likely, right? Yet, in Numbers 21, where snakes were biting them in the wilderness, is it likely that they professed the same thing? In fact, didn’t the snakes come out because they insinuated the opposite of “God is good”?

God is always just and fair.

Meanwhile, in all of God’s dealings with the Israelites and the Egyptians, was God just in all that He did? Will you say His actions were fair?

Scattered all over the scriptures is God’s call to be just (Micah 6:8, Lev. 19:36, 2 Sam. 23:3). Our CLASFON anthem reminds us of this calling (Isaiah 56:1).

The temptation to do things or align with positions that “favour” me is always there and I am constantly learning how to do what is just. I try to apply the same thing when dealing with people. It is easy to get carried away by emotions and get sentimental but a constant reminder of God’s call helps to stay with what is just.

Many a time, the side of justice makes one seem unfeeling, but we must remain encouraged by Proverbs 4:18 – The path of the just is as the shining light, that shines ever brighter unto the perfect day.
